BLUE MOSQUE - ISTANBUL, TURKEY

We had the pleasure of visiting this fine city in April of 2009. It is a magical array of people, culture, textiles and design. People are friendly, eager to please and to sell! They pipe their prayers over a speaker system quite a few times a day. At first  I found this a little strange, but by the 2nd day, I would be looking at my watch saying "isn't it time for prayer?"

One of the most beautiful interiors we were able to visit was the Blue Mosque.  Construction of the Blue Mosque started in 1609 and took seven years to complete. It was commissioned by Sultan Ahmet I when he was just 19 years old.

Inside, the spectacular ceiling is lined with over 20,000 blue tiles. This is where the Mosque got its name. Examples of 16th-century tiles feature flowers, trees and abstract patterns. It is truly amazing. The interior is lit with over 250 windows, which were once filled with 17th-century stained glass, however, these have since been replaced.
